The suspension insulator separates the line conductors and carries them electrically. It consists of the number of porcelain insulation units connected by metal links to form a flexible cord. The conductor is connected to the lower end of the string.

Advantages of the suspension isolator
The suspension isolator has the following advantages.

Each unit operates at a voltage of approximately 11 kV and therefore, depending on the voltage, the corresponding number of disks is connected in series with the chain.
If one of the units is damaged, it is replaced with the new one, so that the entire string does not have to be replaced.
The string can swing freely in any direction and therefore offers great flexibility for the transmission line.
The conductors are located under the suspension insulators and therefore partially protect the conductor from lightning.
Types of suspension isolators
The suspension isolator is mainly divided into two types.

Cap and pen type
Hewlett or Interlink type
The detailed explanation of the cap and pin, as well as the Hewlett insulator, is explained below.

1.Cap-and-pin isolator
A galvanized cast iron or forged steel cap and a galvanized forged steel pin are connected to porcelain in the cap and pin construction. The unit is connected by either ball joint or clevis pin connections.

2. Interlink Type Insulator
The connection type unit uses porcelain with two curved channels with planes at right angles to each other. U-shaped, flat, covered steel links led through these channels and served to connect the unit.

The interlink isolators are mechanically stronger than the cad and pin unit. The metallic link continues to support the line when the porcelain breaks between the link. This means that the supply is not interrupted.

The only disadvantage of the Hewlett-type insulator is that it suffers from the disadvantages that the porcelain between the members is subjected to high electrical stresses and therefore its breakdown voltage is lower compared to other types.
